Miracle Maker Feature: Fred Ferguson

Retired Omaha firefighter Fred Ferguson has been a Children’s Miracle Maker since 2007 – which makes him a record-breaker as the supporter with the longest history of monthly giving in the history of the 16-year radiothon.

“Firefighters have a soft spot for children,” Fred says. “The vast majority of us will tell you that if there’s one thing very special to our jobs, it is anything involving children. We understand how hard it is to lose somebody or to see someone in distress.”

When Fred worked from Fire Station #53, just down the road from Children’s at 80th and Dodge Street, he made many runs in the rescue squad to the hospital with sick and injured kids, which reminded him how precious life is and how essential it is to have a full-service pediatric health care center close by.

“I think it’s important for people to help make it one of the best facilities in the country – one that makes us proud,” Fred says.

Fred began donating to Children’s years ago in honor of his wife, Barbara. “She’s the most giving, caring person I’ve ever met,” Fred says. The couple has four children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
